Become a member of Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens - a group of volunteers passionate about the gardens and its future. The Friends play an active role in the future planning and maintenance of this wonderful facility. In 2010/11 alone, the Friends amassed over 7,500 volunteer hours at the Gardens!
The Friends' Centre, opened in 2009, is the hub for gardens information. Community groups and botanical workshops are active in the centre, and visitors are welcome to say hello and take home some great fact sheets, brochures and more. The Centre is open 10am to 2pm daily, manned by the wonderful Friends volunteers.
For further information about guided walks, planting days or joining the organisation, please visit The Friends website or phone 0449 561 674. A fact sheet about our wonderful Friends and supporters is available here.
Gardens Volunteer Wins Environmental Achievement Award - Congratulations Kate!
We are proud to announce that Kate Heffernan has been awarded the 2013 Gold Coast Australia Day Environmental Achievement Award.
Kate has been a dedicated advocate of the Botanic Gardens for 15 years and, in presenting the Award, Council acknowledged "Kate's passionate input has been the most significant single contribution to the Gardens". The Gardens have come to life as a direct result of Kate's vision and drive and are now recognised nationally and internationally as fulfilling the objectives of a botanic garden in conservation, scientific research, education and recreation.
Kate founded the Friends of the Botanic Gardens and has worked tirelessly to inspire this group, plus thousands of other community volunteers to create the wonderful plant collection we have today. For Kate, this award recognises the hard work and commitment shown by all of the Friends volunteers, who work seven days a week maintaining the gardens, running the visitors centre, organising community events and running our schools program.
